For more than twenty years, parents in the North-Eastern area of Singapore have been entrusting their children to Sunshine Kids Care Centre, knowing that their children will be learning and playing in a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment. Offering childcare services for children between the ages of 2 months to 7 years old, Sunshine Kids is committed to the overall holistic development of children, and is dedicated to providing excellent standards of early childhood programmes to nurture confident and caring children with strong morals and positive learning dispositions.
Founders Ms. Clara Yeow and Mr. Yeow Hon Ming have overseen thousands of children since Sunshine Kids’ establishment back in 1991. Their whole journey with Sunshine Kids was born from a desire to contribute to society. Hon Ming said, “We had the passion to give back to our community and to make a difference, but initially we did not know how to do so.”
However, when a tender for a childcare centre came out in the newspaper, both Hon Ming and Clara very quickly knew that this was what they wanted. They went on to successfully tender for their first premise in Hougang, thus heralding the birth of Sunshine Kids Care Centre.
With an empty centre, both founders know they had their work cut out for them. Hon Ming said, “We did not have any experience in this industry, so we had to learn the trade as well.”
Based on the ECDA’s framework, the learning curriculum at Sunshine Kids is carefully curated to develop each child’s cognitive, emotional, social, physical, and creative potential. “We focus a lot of our attention on teaching soft skills, as we feel that EQ is just as important as IQ”, said Clara.
Not people who rest on their laurels, both founders constantly strive to be at the forefront of the growing childcare industry by investing heavily in teacher’s training, state-of-the-art teaching materials, as well as, ensuring the incorporation of well researched pedagogical practices into the curriculum.
Keeping in line with their vision of giving back to society, the founders also do their utmost best to not turn away children from financially disadvantaged families. Clara said, “We do not turn away families based on their inability to pay, and we find a way to accommodate them. There have even been cases where we pay out of our own pockets so that their children can enroll in our centre.”
With each passing year, the centre continues to receive more and more students, a testament to the success their commitment and hard work has achieved. Clara said, “This is our fourteenth year (at the Punggol centre), and we continue to have very healthy enrollment numbers.”
Not limiting their attention to just children that pass through their doors, Sunshine Kids actively engages with their families as well. “We learnt how to foster partnerships between the centre and the families, and how to build trustworthy relationships with them.”
With the number of children exceeding their threshold increasing year after year, Sunshine Kids has also decided to expand with the opening of a new branch located in Tampines Central 8.
Clara added, “We are also looking to upgrade our curriculum and to consolidate our experiences in order to reach out to more children. For a childcare centre, we are pretty low profile, but we want to slowly change people’s perception of neighbourhood childcare centres, to let them know that neighbourhood centres are able to deliver results as well.”
Hon Ming and Clara have contributed much of their lives towards the betterment of children’s futures. With unwavering passion toward their work, it is safe to say that Sunshine Kids will continue to serve the community with dedication and commitment for many more years to come. As Clara said, “At the heart of it, we have the best interests for the children.”
