Putting smiles on people’s faces is what husband and wife team, Calvin Teo and Annabelle Tan, do best. They operate One-Stop No. 1 Entertainment; a company that helps customers plan events and parties. One-Stop has been able to bring smiles onto people’s faces everywhere they go. They provide a myriad of services, that includes, magic shows, juggling, balloon sculpturing, kite making, and many more.

After being a regular in the Singapore Air Force from 1998 to 2005, Calvin decided to branch out and pursue his passion in entertaining others. Calvin and Amanda are both certified balloon artists. In addition, Calvin also doubles as a magician whenever magic shows are needed.

Calvin mentioned that his father initially introduced him to magic. He said that it did not take long for him to fall in love with this art form. Soon, he found himself becoming a member of the Singapore Association of Magicians. He highlighted that practicing magic has not only given his much joy, but has also taught him the importance of having patience in perfecting a craft.

As with any new company, One-Stop saw themselves being relative unknowns due to them being a newcomer in the industry. That resulted in a smaller customer base, but the duo knew that the only way to push forward is by offering more services and adapting to customer’s demands.

“We needed to adapt in terms of both prices and performances. We needed to practice more, work hard and oversee everything”, Calvin added. On top of that, they had to slowly gain exposure by supporting other acts. The experience has taught the duo many valuable lessons as they are allowed the rare chance to learn from more seasoned practitioners in the industry.

One-stop is literally a “one-stop” station for every event or party need. From clowning, to making steam peanuts and muah chee, Calvin and Annabelle have it all covered. One other way in which One-Stop manages to stand out from their peers is their famous “Man in Balloon” act. This unique show makes use of both Calvin’s and Annabelle’s talents in balloon making to entertain the crowd. More importantly, it is also a performance rarely seen on our shores, where the finale of the act will see Calvin enter a giant balloon.

When asked about One-Stop’s plans for the future, Calvin mentioned that the company is doing very well at the moment and hopes to do more shows in the future. He specifically said that he would like to host corporate events and is looking for like-minded people to become business partners with. Being consummate professionals, Calvin and Annabelle are still consistently planning and practicing new acts and performances so that the audience will see something new and refreshing all the time.

Saying that Calvin is passionate about his work is an understatement, this is fully exemplified when he said, “I will never reject any gig. This is because I like entertaining people, and also, this gives me more chance to practice my skills”.

Calvin went on to give his take on the meaning of entrepreneurship, he said, “Always prepare for every situation. Remember to plan week by week, don’t try to plan too much, but you must always know everything that is going on”. In addition, Calvin also said that professionalism is everything in this industry, and not only must the performer ensure that his/her act is perfect and flawless, the performer must always ensure that he/she delivers the promises to customers.

Evidently, One-Stop is not all fun and games as a serious amount of hard work and professionalism provide serious grounding and discipline for Calvin and Annabelle. They are fully aware that it is easy for people to lose focus, and that the only way towards success will is to be mentally disciplined and goal-oriented.

Calvin said that the successful entrepreneur is never calculative and always strives to work harder with every passing day. He said that these two traits would be able to answer both the customer-service aspect of the business and also establish a good standard of service. By being generous rather than over-calculative, one is more able to establish a rapport with customers and create a relationship that is more open and friendly. Also, being hardworking will allow an entrepreneur to perfect his/her chosen craft.

Ultimately, One-Stop’s success comes from the couple’s attention to detail and desire to perfect their chosen craft. They are motivated purely by the desire to make people smile, and it is with this sincerity that will see One-Stop soar to greater heights in the coming years.
