House of Kids Pte Ltd

Name of Recipient:
Ms. Josephine Cheong

Driven by a passion to make a difference in children’s lives, Josephine decided to set up her own pre-school education center that focuses on bringing holistic learning for children all the way to the age of six.

When asked about reasons for going into business, Josephine mentioned that she worked for PCF in the mid-90s and from her experience there, she decided to start her own school. It is one of her beliefs that children all need a sense of accomplishment and recognition, as such; she models her pedagogical methods behind those two principles. House of Kids believe in slowly nurturing children into becoming independent and confident people in the future.

Josephine mentioned that she had to learn from scratch in the initial period of business. In addition, it was also because the center was relatively new that handling parents was somewhat of a difficulty. However, it is always with positivity in mind that Josephine managed to overcome all these initial obstacles. Josephine said that it was only a matter of time before parents started to warm up to the center, she mentioned that building a rapport takes a considerable amount of time and effort, and that everyone at House of Kids are eventually on friendly terms with the children’s parents. Moreover, the initial phase of trepidation experienced by parents decreased because the center actually saw a higher rate of enrollment due to positive reviews. Josephine mentioned that the reason behind the center’s success is the positive attitude of everyone at House of Kids.

Always with a charitable spirit, Josephine felt that contributing to a child’s upbringing is the best way to give back to the society. She mentioned that discouraged children may grow up into adults who do not believe in their abilities, hence, she felt that opening up a center that focuses on the individual needs of each child will be beneficial to the industry of early education.

When asked about her proudest achievements to date, Josephine exhibited tremendous compassion as she said that she feels accomplished when her students are able to learn from what was taught at the center and translate that goodness into society. She added that she feels heartened when her students utilize the knowledge that they acquired from House of Kids. She said that having a good foundation since young is vital for a child’s upbringing, because the first six years of a child’s life is where a child’s behavior and values are shaped.

Plan for expansion is on the cards, as Josephine hopes to set up a center that primarily helps out children with special needs. She said that she would do whatever she can in order to help out those in a disadvantageous situation.

Always placing compassion before revenue, Josephine said, “you cannot take money as the main purpose, you must go with your passion, and only then, money will follow”. According to Josephine, she tries to implement the principle of compassion into her center. Rather than think of maximizing profit, Josephine’s focus is on providing the best possible education for the students.

Moreover, Josephine also mentioned that she sees herself more like a mother to their students, as she fulfills a nurturing role in the center. She added that she sees her center more like her home than a workplace, because she is playing an important role in molding the future of the country.

“Be sincere and through your sincerity people can see the real you”. This was what Josephine replied when asked about the most important trait necessary for success. Clearly, it is only by being committed to working with sincerity that people will trust an organization. In addition, Josephine said that one must be honest, and went on to say, “When you make a mistake, admit it, apologize and move on”.

As is evident, the ethos at House of Kids is sincerity and truthfulness. It is only with the fusion of these two qualities that one can hope to gain a vote of trust from those around. Judging by House of Kids’ performance, it is needless to say that they have more than exceeded their own expectations as they are the model of success that many others will look up to for many more years to come.
