Mr. Tan Soo Khim
For the people of today, many paper products are indispensible. Packet tissues are the staple of many handbags, while box tissues are useful for office or home spills. However, as much as we use them, most don’t stop to think of its origins, and how we have come to rely so much on them. One company which specializes in such paper products for commercial and public use is Yak Soon Trading Co., providing superior products to the market for over 30 years.
Established in 1982 by Mr. Tan Soo Khim, one of the flagship tissue brands under Yak Soon Trading was the Sakura Brand. Later, he established another brand, Twin Baby, and trademarked it too. The name was inspired by Mr. Tan’s twin daughters; exhilarated with his twins, Mr. Tan proceeded to create a brand for them.
Starting a business was a dream that Mr. Tan had when he was young. However, Mr. Tan felt he had to gather experience first. Working in Singapore Paper Products as a salesman, Mr. Tan climbed up the career ladder and gained the favor of his bosses. However, the long held dream lingered with him, and after 6 years of working as an employee, Mr. Tan was ready to be a boss. Rather than persuading him to stay, Mr. Tan’s chairman let him go gracefully, a fact Mr. Tan is still grateful for.
Creating the company Yak Soon Trading Co., the journey was just beginning, and Mr. Tan knew there were many obstacles he had to face. A small company, Mr. Tan had to manage much of the company’s day-to-day operations by himself, running sales, doing accounting. However, Mr. Tan counts himself very lucky, as he is surrounded by supportive family, friends, and clients. Young and motivated, Yak Soon begun finding its footing, with Mr. Tan’s brother joining the company to help out, and various clients providing great support in the process.
Although they are not a large company, Mr. Tan is proud of the fact that they have managed to thrive under the tough competition. “We are considered a small company, but we know that our product must be superior, our service must be superior. Any order that comes in, no matter the size, we are committed to completing it as soon as we can. Same, or next day service, that is something that distinguishes us from the rest.”
With his many years of experience, we thought Mr. Tan would be great person to disperse some advice for up and coming entrepreneurs. “Sincerity and credibility. These are very important. You must have your feet on the ground, and you must not be greedy towards results. Be honest in your dealings, and your clients will feel your sincerity.” In addition, Mr. Tan thinks it is very important to have the right employees. “The attitude of your employees is very important. If they are hardworking and diligent, your business will grow alongside them.”
Lastly, he thinks that an aspiring entrepreneur should possess strong faith and motivation. “They cannot be afraid of hard work. The pressure of competition will always be there, but it is up to them to persevere till the end, and reap rich rewards with their durability. However, they must also be careful not to be too ambitious, take the time to get to your goals properly.”
With the many years of experience under his belt, Mr. Tan knows where Yak Soon Trading Co. will proceed next. With his son now aiding him in company operations, Mr. Tan hopes to increase the company sales. Although, he admits, the competition to break in the supermarket is too intense to be considered feasible. However, Mr. Tan is adamant to maintain their credibility, no matter their size and sales. With superiority in products and their own integrity, Yak Soon Trading Co. will continue to thrive and survive in this tough society.
