About Hock Wah Motor Workshop
Name of Recipient:
Mr. Koh Chai Seng
Established since 1982, Hock Wah Motor Workshop has more than 30 years of engineering expertise. With such wealth of experience, it is not surprising that they have earned the preferred workshop status of up to 7 reputable insurances companies in Singapore. They’re mainly: NTUC Income, Etiqa (Maybank) Insurance, Tokio Marine Insurance, China Taiping Insurance, India International Insurance, First Capital Insurance Limited and SHC Insurance.
“We’ve taken our expertise and expanded into a complete one-stop solution for all vehicles: Our main servicing centre at Bedok specializes in vehicle repair, servicing and accident claims, whilst the outlet at Tampines specialized in spray painting as well as vehicle servicing,” said Mr Koh Chai Seng, Managing director of the company. Under his stewardship, the company has attained the UKAS ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management Certification since year 2003 with a proven track record in automotive repair industry.
Mr Koh’s decision to set up his own company stems from his family members. “My parents set up their own business-poultry at the land behind our house at Jalan Loyang Besar. When they decided not to continue the poultry business, we decided to become entrepreneurs and set up our own business at year 1982 since the piece of land was ours anyway,” explained Mr Koh, “At the same time, the five of us, all brothers worked at different workshops to learn spray painting and panel beating. Some of them learned to become car mechanics, we decided to continue what they had learnt to put in their skills in this business and hence we are in this industry.”
Nevertheless, after a year since they started the business, they were told to move away as the land was needed for further developments. To compensate them, the Government rented a workshop in Yishun for them. That marks the beginning of the hardship days for Mr Koh as business level decreases drastically because customers from Loyang felt that the journey was too far to travel and some didn’t even know their whereabouts.
Be that as it may, in the year 1986, Mr Koh signed a contract with NTUC Income to get authorization and this stabilizes their business. “We decided to venture into the accident repair market. There were a couple of insurance companies that were looking for quality workshops at that time and so we approached them,” shared Mr Koh about his ideas back then. As NTUC Income occupied a huge market of the vehicles population in Singapore, business will bound to flourish for the company with this partnership as insurer’s vehicle will consistently be sent into the authorized workshop for servicing and repairs. To further differentiate themselves, the company has since extended their partnership to other insurance companies as well like Tokio Marine & Etiqa Insurance and many others reputable ones as well.
To encourage more entrepreneurs in Singapore, Mr Koh has some words of advice. “Do not be afraid of failure despite the obstacles ahead, if you’re clear on your dreams, you’ve got to protect it, this is the path to success and if you want to build something great in your life; this is the best way to pursue your goals!”
This year, Hock Wah Motor is entering into its 30th Anniversary and with the rich amount of experience in the automotive industry, the company will definitely continue to grow and flourish consistently.
