Name of Recipient:
Mr. Anthony Hoong Moh Keng
Robert Kiyosaki once said, “The size of your success is measured by the strength of your desire; the size of your dream; and how you handle disappointment along the way.”
Through Mr Robert Kiyosaki’s teaching, Mr Anthony Hoong Moh Keng, director of A.Nexus Global Pte Ltd, was inspired to excel and stay constantly motivated in his business. “As long as you believe in yourself, you can achieve it!” exclaimed Mr Hoong, who went through EQ and IQ trainings to improve himself.
A.Nexus Global Pte Ltd is a consultancy company that provides training for agents. It deals with a mixture of importation and exportation of foreign properties. Currently, the company is not a license property company. Therefore, it works in tandem with Property Matters, a company which Mr Hoong has held some shares in, whereby A.Nexus Global brings in projects and Property Matters provides the license agents to market the properties. Amongst the projects that the company has includes projects mainly with Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, China and Australia.
Mr Hoong’s decision to embark on his own business could be traced back to his army days. “I started with nothing,” recalled Mr Hoong, who had just come out of the army back then. When Mr Hoong left the army, he went back to work at his old company, where he thought would be a familiar environment to work in. However, time waits for no man. With the advancement of technology, Mr Hoong realized that despite his past experience working as a part- timer in the company, they were not taken into consideration when he reapplied for a permanent job. Ergo, Mr Hoong had to work his way up again slowly as a junior employee. Unsatisfied with what he is doing, Mr Hoong knew deep down in his heart that he has a better and more meaningful calling in his life. Therefore, meanwhile when Mr Hoong is still working, his heart is open for other opportunities out in the market.
Not long after, Mr Hoong decided to join a new industry, which he had zero experience in by working as a store man in the F&B industry. While he might be a green horn, Mr Hoong learnt the ropes within a short period of time and with the blink of an eye, he was already helping to bring in new suppliers from overseas for the company. “I was basically the store man cum marketing personnel for my company,” explained Mr Hoong with pride. Nevertheless, Mr Hoong worked his socks off and was eventually being promoted to oversee 4 cafes’ operation.
Be that as it may, Mr Hoong realized that as the company grew, new positions would be created and he knew he would be replaced by the new graduates eventually. With that in mind, he decided to take up some consultancy courses to learn how to be an outspoken person and thus augment his skill sets.
Eventually, in 2003 to 2008 he became the consultant for various companies after acquiring the skills, training & development over more than 5000 distributors in Australia, China, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. “This is a classic example of self upgrading to improve your resume and enhance your job opportunities,” quipped Mr Hoong.
Through the various stints in the different industries, Mr Hoong learned that as long as he put his mind into doing something, nothing will be too hard to handle. In no time, Mr Hoong found himself searching for another product that was worth marketing for, which he eventually came across – property. In 2008, zeroeing himself down again, Mr Hoong relearnt everything from scratch and it took him an arduous 4 years before he fully grasped the knowledge.
Unsurprisingly, Mr Hoong also had his fair share of problems when he first started. “Being new in the industry, we can’t do as many things as some established companies and funding has always been an issue, with the payment of comission always being delayed,” lamented Mr Hoong.
However, to differentiate themselves, Mr Hoong ensured that every of his agents are knowledgeable and equipped with the information to advise his clients to invest in the right properties.
“We want to build a long standing relationship with the clients. We are not just a buy and sell renting agent. We aim to bring real value to our customers and to do that, my agents need to do their homework to have their knowledge,” explicated Mr Hoong about the company’s emphasis in being customer oriented.
Hence, what does entrepreneurship mean to Mr Hoong? “It is not just about setting up a business. You need to be persistent as it is not easy to start a business from scratch at all. You need to lead by example (Know what to do), have the leadership (How to go about doing it) and to have the vision to look beyond what you want to do.”
Last but not least, Mr Hoong has some words of advice for young people who want to start their own business, “You need to have your basic skills first before delving into the unknown. Don’t follow the crowd. Having said that, don’t be afraid to try new things! Innovation is something that is lacking in most of us today. Dare to dream!”
Above all, stating his biggest achievements to date, Mr Hoong commented, “I’m actually surprised that someone nominated us. Having said that, I’m happy to be able to work with some developers who gave us exclusive properties to sell. Also, I’m deeply honoured that developers were willing to give such a small company so many opportunities, even from places as far as Melbourne.”
