Name of Recipient:
Mr. Yew Hoe Soon
“Consider the postage stamp; its usefulness consists in the ability to stick to one thing until it gets there.” Josh Billings
Indeed, patience and perseverance surmounts every difficulty. Qualities in which almost all of the success stories in the world relate to, they have been mentioned more than a dozen time during the sharing by Mr Yew Hoe Soon – owner of YT AUTOMATION SINGAPORE. The man behind the ascendancy of the company could not overemphasize the importance of such qualities in his journey to success. “It takes time to build a business. However, one must not lose sight of his targets or goals of running a business and never give up. Never ever throw in the towel.”
Incorporated in Singapore on April 2010, YT AUTOMATION SINGAPORE is an Industrial Automation Trading company which provides application /technical support, supplying a comprehensive range of industrial automation controls products to various industries. It is also an authorized distributor for M2I corporation touch screen, LSIS programmable logic controller, Hyundai frequency inverter, J&D electronics power & energy measurement solutions and fine suntronix power supply/noise filter/solid state relay.
Entrepreneurship has been exposed to Mr Yew at an early stage. Mr Yew’s grandfather used to run a grocery store in Malaysia. He helped out at the shop when he was young and enjoyed the experience of running a business. This led to him being inspired to become an entrepreneur one day. Not surprisingly, he has not looked back ever since, growing leaps and bounds in his endeavour to be the most successful entrepreneur.
What led Mr Yew to decide to venture into this industry? To begin with, he studied electrical engineering in university. In the last 13 years, he worked in the automation field both as an engineer in a vendor company that was supporting clients and being the support to internal manufacturing team in Aerospace and Pharmaceutical Industries companies. A veteran in this field, he understood the needs of vast groups of clients in this field and thus it was only natural that he put this expertise to good use and crossed the Rubicon to embark on his journey into the entrepreneur world.
However, it was not all smooth sailing for Mr Yew when he first started the business. “At the beginning state, customers always challenge us on pricing. It is hard to convince customers to do business with us as a new company.” Mr Yew recounted. Citing problems such as competing with the bigger companies that could offer competitive pricing and also convincing customers to put their faith in a new company, Mr Yew realized that it required more than just competitive pricing to overcome the problems.
“We realized that customers need more support and services from us instead of pricing. For example, I had to be sure that I’m prompt in my service. There was once I had to ensure that I fly the next day to KL to support the client on the spot on the technical areas that they are not familiar with.” Adopting a customer oriented strategy, Mr Yew hopes to build a long term business relationship with customers by aiming to exceed the expectations of every customer by offering exemplary customer service, good payment terms, prompt support and delivery time. “As long as we can provide good service and support, customers will support us regularly in our businesses.” For instance, Mr Yew shared that part of the strategy to differentiate from others is to provide product guarantee services to build on the customers’ confidence and satisfaction level in their products. “Customers can use the product at trial and if they are not satisfied they can return the product.” In addition, additional services and support are provided at no additional costs to ensure customers satisfaction and to gain a place in their hearts. Mr Yew further added with pride, “My proudest business achievement is when customers are satisfied with our services and support!”
When quizzed on his views about entrepreneurship, Mr Yew answered, “Entrepreneurship means a lot to me as it shows my personal capabilities and my goals and achievements in life. It’s not just about making money. It’s fulfilling to be able to have one’s own business and seeing the business move up the next level.”
Projecting his plans for the future, Mr Yew revealed that he plans to hire more engineers for his business in Singapore. He also plans to expand further by setting up a branch in Johor Bahru by the end of this Year. Plans to have a business associate partner in Indonesia are also in the running.
Lastly, Mr Yew has a piece of advice for budding entrepreneurs. “One of the commonest mistakes and one of the costliest is thinking that success is due to some genius, some magic – something or other which we do not possess. Success is generally due to holding on, and failure to letting go. You decide to learn a language, study music, take a course of reading, and train yourself physically; will it be success or failure? It depends upon how much pluck and perseverance that word “decide” contains. The decision that nothing can overrule, the grip that nothing can detach will bring success. For those who wish to venture into business, my advice would be to set a goal on what they want to achieve, try their utmost best and do not just give up easily.”
