Mr. Mark Tan Peng Liat
What does entrepreneurship means to you? To Mr Mark Tan Peng Liat, founder of The People Studio, entrepreneurship means taking calculated risks. “You cannot enter a business blindly and hope to get lucky. A successful entrepreneur will explore all possible angles, and take the path that nets the highest gain for the lowest level of risk.” Mr Tan espouses.
Founded in 2010, the idea to start his own business was triggered when Mr Tan was taking his Business Management degree in SIM. Mr Tan elucidated, “We were taught so much about the workings of a successful business, management theories, strategies, etc. I felt that all these knowledge would be easily forgotten if they were not applied in reality. I also wanted to build something that I could be proud of, something to call my own. No point sitting around dreaming, because time waits for no man! What better way to achieve my goals and apply the knowledge gained, than to grow a business?”
The People Studio provides a one stop solution for all modelling, acting and casting needs for the various media projects and events. The projects have a myriad of categories such as from television commercials to feature films; newspaper prints to magazine editorials; and promotional events to fashion runways. The People Studio matches the faces to the project. Its 24 hour, 7 days a week service availability provides customers with the ideal solution for urgent projects and ad hoc models and talents emergencies. “Our business revolves around people and we care for our people with all our hearts. That’s why our logo has the Chinese word “ren” in it, and we are called The People Studio.” Mr Tan shared about the origins of the company name.
Mr Tan’s decision to venture into this sunrise industry stems from his desire to want to provide a fair opportunity for all aspiring performers to enter the media industry. “Many people want their chance at stardom, and we want to offer them that lucky break! No hidden agendas, no fine print. Just a desire to help, and grow together.” Mr Tan revealed.
On the other hand, Mr Tan’s initial journey as a young entrepreneur was not without its hitches. “When we first started, it was just my partner and I running the business. We were understaffed and overworked.” Mr Tan said in retrospect. Facing manpower issues and the demands of having to juggle between his academic rigour and work, Mr Tan often had to work till the wee hours of the night and catch up with his studies. Despite the vicissitudes that Mr Tan faced initially, he managed to complete his studies and the company has since grown from strength to strength, flourishing propitiously under his leadership. He pointed out poignantly that dedication and hard work were two key factors that guided him whenever he was mired in quandary. “The person who makes a success of living is the one who sees his goal steadily and aims for it unswervingly. That is dedication.”
One might wonder just what makes The People Studio stands out from the crowd? The answer lies in the following three words : Fliexibility, transparency and accountability.
Flexiblility is practiced to cater to everybody’s specific needs, while maintaining a high standard of quality. For instance, there were many last minute projects that had very tight deadlines. “If we accept a project, we have to ensure that it is completed flawlessly.” Mr Tan emphasized. There were also student and charity projects which were faced with budget constraints. “We still try our very best to search for people that are willing to help. Our goal is to make sure all our clients are properly satisfied by a job well done, irregardless of the circumstances faced. Customers is our core responsibility and we will try to meet every requirements with our utmost dedication and effort.” Mr Tan added with pride. Ttransparency and accountability were also practised as their core values so as to earn the trust of customers.
In addition, Mr Tan illuminate his proudest achievement to date. “Although we’ve only been in business for 2 years, we’ve landed roles for our people in some major films! From a Jack Neo movie, to a feature film in the Cannes International Film Festival. Anybody can be a star. You just have to WANT it, and we’ll help out with the rest.”
Steve Jobs once said “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”
Ergo, so what advice does Mr Tan have for budding entrepreneurs? “Do your “homework” because knowledge is power. Never start a business blindly. Always explore every possible angle, and take calculated risks. Also, be flexible and listen to what people have to say. Some may offer invaluable advice! A strong team is a must. There is only so much one man can do, the rest must be trusted to the hands of capable partners.” Mr Tan espoused.
Indeed, with the foresight to avoid failures, the guts to accept them, and the will to carry on, the future of The People Studio under the leadership of the indefatigable Mr Tan definitely paints a rosy picture with the sky as its limits.
