In 2006, Mr Tan Wek Kuang (Benny) took his first step in starting up his own business; Global Marine & Industry Pte Ltd, after his 20 years experiences in the Marine industry. Global Marine & Industry is a competent team of highly skilled professional engineers, technicians and craftsmen in each respective field that specialize in ship repairs, workshop repairs, product and spare part distribution and supplies.
In a short span of less than 3 years, they have achieved their initial goal as Marine air-con Service Company. “Customers who are satisfied with our services even turn to us for other services such as Electrical, Steelwork & Piping and Mechanical work.” Mr Tan said with a glee on his face. Soon they import and being stockiest of saleable compressors.
“Starting a business the management needs to make sharp and precise decision, as every decision made will affect the whole business and every staff working under me,” remarked Mr Tan. “My hands-on training and experience for more than 20 years in marine based company gave me confidence towards the success of the business” Mr. Tan continued. With the good relationship formed with many people in the industry throughout the years, it enables them to communicate and support Mr Tan.
The initial startup of the business wasn’t easy for Mr Tan and his company. Many doubted their capabilities but this doesn’t stop them from moving forward. Mr Tan encourages his Marketing Teams to stay in close contact with their entire existing customer and built good relationships with them. Every job that is awarded to us will be monitored closely to ensure successful completion without major setbacks.
“In order to out shine ourselves in this competitive industry, we provide more than just services. We will go the extra mile by providing them advices and suggestion on how to take care and inspect other related area of the equipment which has been serviced/ repaired in order to have lasting working conditions.” Mr Tan elucidated.
Mr Tan was without doubt optimistic about Global Marine & Industry Pte Ltd plan for expansion. “The plan includes diversifying the business interest to various sectors of food products and engineering equipment and spares which eventually can be linked to provide supplies to vessels.” Mr Tan also mentioned about the company’s vision of securing big project with a turnover at least 5 folds of what they have now and keep progressing forward. “Our current focus is to be recognized other than local market as marine air-con spare parts stockiest.” Mr Tan interpreted with determination.
“Being knowledgeable of the products you represent and having sharp vision, which enable you to provide good judgment are essential to the success of the business” Mr Tan remarked the pertinence of the qualities in an entrepreneurship.
Mr Tan’s advices for the budding entrepreneurs “like what you are doing and not just inspired by other people’s successes.” Always be humble and respect everybody, from your customers to your subordinates, suppliers and sub-contractors. “Your successes will be easier with all the helps and supports you can get” Mr Tan emphasize.
